Because pianos are made out of wood, slight changes in temperature and humidity can affect a piano's tuning stability; wood absorbs or loses moisture content causing it to swell or shrink. Tension on the strings increase or decrease with this swelling and shrinkage, and very slight movement in the strings with the bridges and soundboard of the piano cause the strings' vibrations to change, making the piano sound of tune.

Include in this the employment of the piano playing, the piano is also played out of tune.

It is recommended that pianos are tuned at least once a year, but preferably piano tuning should be every six months, especially if it’s regularly played.

Pianoworks offers expert piano tuning and maintenance in homes and public venues.

On time, and reliable appointments. A maintenance piano tuning is usually around an hour. Pitch raises take longer and its recommended that a follow-up tuning is arranged soon. Please contact to arrange.

It is necessary as part of Health and Safety that pianos can be moved safely in a public place; we offer the specialist fitting of anti-tipping castors for uprights and tailor-made A-frames for Grand Pianos. Minor repairs can sometimes be included with the tuning, but may also be symptomatic of further work that may be necessary. I am pleased to estimate for any repair, however small, up to a full rebuild. For larger repairs or restoration, I always give a firm quote, taking into consideration the realistic value of our piano before and after the repair based on a thorough knowledge of the market.

Examinations for valuation or repair is also offered. There is a charge for visiting the piano and for a written valuation.
